Travel
and Lodging Information:
Airports: The
closest airport to the UC Berkeley campus is the Oakland International
Airport (OAK) and the next closest is the San Francisco International
Airport (SFO). Please note
that because of the post-September 11th security measures
and the beginning of UC Berkeley commencements, you must arrive at the
airports 2-3 hours in advance and must account for one hour travel time
to the Oakland Airport and 1½-2 hours to the SF Airport.
Shuttles: The
cheapest airport shuttle service to Berkeley is Bayporter.
Bayporter: OAK-Berkeley one way is
$19, RT $32, and SFO-Berkeley one way is $22, RT $38. You can make reservations
online at http://www.bayporter.com or by phone (NOT
toll free, 1-415-467-1800). The Berkeley stop
for Bayporter is the Hotel Durant.
Hotels: Rooms have been blocked at the Hotel Durant, which is located on the
south side of campus, a block away from the conference location, the
Pacific Film Archive theater, and the famous Telegraph Avenue. Singles
and doubles have been blocked for the nights of May 8, 9, 10, and 11.
This means that they are held for us at the UC discount rate through
April 8, 2003. You will have by April 8 to contact the Hotel Durant
and reserve your room. To reserve your room, please contact the hotel
by calling 1-800-2DURANT (1-800-238-7268). You must indicate that you
are reserving rooms blocked for the "Trash
Cinema" conference. If that fails, try "Townsend
Center." There is no list of individual names. You will
then be able to pay for your rooms on the phone or online.
The UC discounted rate at the Hotel Durant is:
$110 for a single room
$110 for a double room – 2 beds ($55 per person)
$120 for a double room and a roll-out bed – 3 beds ($40 per person)
The doubles have two separate beds unless you indicate that you would
like a queen-size bed. If you would like a roll-out bed, you must indicate
this as well. It is about $10 more for a roll-out bed.
The last day to reserve the blocked rooms with the UC discounted rate
is April 8, 2003. However, please confirm your reservations as soon
as possible so that I will still be able to raise the number of rooms
if necessary as well as help you problems if there are any.

Public
Transportation and Car Rentals:
Public Transportation in Berkeley includes the campus perimeter
shuttle and AC Transit.
Please visit the UC Berkeley Visitor
Services page for more information.
To visit San Francisco from Berkeley, you can take bart or AC Transit (the F or G), and
once in San Francisco, you can take the San
Francisco Muni. Public transportation is useful for visiting locations
such as north to downtown SF (The SF MOMA, Yerba Buena Center for the
Arts, Union Square, Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, Little Italy
– and, of course, trashy Columbus Ave.! – etc.) and the
Castro (with the lovely Castro theater!) where parking is scarce. If
you want to see the Golden Gate Bridge, however, I advise that you drive.
Car Rentals: If you do not rent from the airport, the closest
car rental is Avis on Oxford at University
Ave. Other useful car rental site include Breezenets and Berkeley
Car Info page.
Registration
and tickets for the films:
There are no registration fees for the conference and tickets will be
free for all speakers. The conference is free and open to the public
and the film tickets will be sold at the Pacific
Film Archive Theater
*** At the Friday evening films, please look for the registration table
for speakers. You will receive your information packet and tickets to
the films. If you are inviting friends to the film screenings,
they can purchase tickets at the Pacific
Film Archive Theater or by phone 510-642-5249 (charge-by-phone).
Speakers'
Dinner:
Saturday evening before the films, all speakers are invited to join
the speakers' dinner. More information will be posted later on dinner
fees and directions.
